Along with rest of the State, Tuensang, Mon and Longleng districts were also severely hit by the unprecedented rains that occurred on July 28 that washed away many major road.

Two major highways – Tuensang to Tobu and Tobu to Mon – were also damaged at multiple locations, cutting off 21 villages with a population of over 45,000. Many farmlands along river banks were also damaged by flash floods.

With support from Hindustan Computers Ltd (HCL) Noida, Eleutheros Christian Society (ECS) undertook restoration work on the road below Hakchang village connecting Tuensang and Tobu. The damage caused was extensive as a large portion of the road was blocked, while about 50 meters of the road, including the bridge, was swept away.

The work involved cutting of fresh earth (about 300 metres) sloping down to the river from both ends and layering of stone chips/blocks on the slopes to enable movement of vehicles.

Meanwhile, ECS also provided soya bean seeds as livelihood alternatives to farmers across nine villages whose crops were damaged by the floods. Soya bean is feasible crop that can be cultivated in damaged areas and help farmers recover some of the losses in a short period of time. The society also offered farmers to buyback the produce after the harvest.

According to ECS, this could be the first corporate house to respond to the current crisis and it sincerely thanked the company for timely help and encouraging others to join as well.
