Businessman Robert Vadra, the brother-in-law of Congress president Rahul Gandhi, appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) Wednesday in connection with a case of alleged money laundering related to certain properties in the UK. This is the first time Vadra has appeared before any central probe agency.

Robert Vadra left the ED office after over five and a half hours of interrogation around 9.45 p.m.

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday strongly came out in support of her husband Robert Vadra, whom she dropped off at by the Enforcement Directorate’s office for questioning in a money laundering case.

In an apparent political message, Priyanka Gandhi dropped off her husband before taking charge as the Congress general secretary at the AICC headquarters.

“He is my husband, he is my family...I support my family,” she said when asked whether she was sending a message by dropping off her husband. Asked if it was a political vendetta, she said that everyone knows why this is being done. The case pertains to money laundering and alleged possession of illegal foreign assets.

The ED summoned Vadra again on February 7. Speaking after the questioning, Vadra’s lawyer Suman Jyoti Khaitan said, “He has given an undertaking that he will appear (before the Enforcement Directorate) when summoned.” Khaitan added that Vadra had appeared before the ED on his own, without receiving any summons.

Priyanka assumes charge

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra Wednesday took charge as AICC general secretary and will helm the party’s affairs in Uttar Pradesh East. She arrived at the party headquarters at Akbar Road after dropping her husband at the office of the Enforcement Directorate for questioning in a money laundering case. She also met some party workers and leaders from the Hindi heartland state.

During her 15-minute stay at the party office, security personnel had a hard time controlling the crowd that had gathered there.

A large number of party workers welcomed her by raising slogans of “Priyanka Gandhi aayi hai, nayi roshni layi hai” (Priyanka Gandhi has come, she has brought light). “I am extremely happy to be here,” Priyanka told reporters soon after she reached Congress headquarters. She thanked her brother and Congress president Rahul Gandhi for entrusting her with the responsibility and said people of UP had given a lot to her family.
