Effectively utilizing ICT by teachers during closure of schools

 (An E-Learning Introduction)

Corona virus outbreak has affected every walk of life. As a precautionary measure, Government of Nagaland has declared closure of all educational institutions from 17th March to 12th April 2020. However, many teachers are concerned about the educational progress of their students. There is a need to ensure that the students don’t lose their valuable learning time.
Well, a teacher can very much assist a student in their learning curve by using the available information and communication tools. There are many teaching tools available on the Internet, some which are available for free but of limited nature and some which are paid but costly, not only financially but from the usage point of view too.
A great and a simple tool which will surely help a teacher in reaching out to the students during these times is the Google Classroom. A freely available tool for teachers as well as students to continue teaching and learning virtually.
Google Classroom allows a teacher to create a virtual classroom for his students. It also helps both the students and teachers organize assignments, collaborate, and foster better communication. With Classroom, educators can create classes, distribute assignments, grade and send feedback, and see everything in one place. Educators can track student’s progress to know where and when to give extra feedback.
A teacher can also create short videos of lessons and upload it to YouTube. This YouTube video can be linked as part of the student’s coursework in the Google Classroom.
To start using these features, you can visit the link https://classroom.google.com/ and sign in with your google account. Once logged in, a teacher will first need to create a class. For every class created by a teacher, a code will be generated which needs to be shared with your students in order for them to join the class. Google Classroom can also be downloaded from Google Playstore.
Teaching and assessing online had never been easy for many teachers. But one factor that I believe will help in successful implementation is that almost every student has a smart phone. And using this smart phone, it will be easy for a teacher to connect with the students.
There are also many good tutorial videos available on YouTube for using the Google Classroom effectively. I recommend that concerned teachers and educators be encouraged and try utilising these tools to makeup the learning time of our students. Stop rumours, Share Ideas.
