An engineer of a company engaged in road construction and with his two staff were kidnapped from his work place in Manipur’s Noney district on Thursday night.

Police suspect the kidnappers to be cadres of an armed outfit actively operating in the district.

The engineer of ABCI Infrastructures Private Ltd, his driver and a staff of the company were whisked away by the armed miscreants from Lamdangmei village under Noney police station of Noney district, the police said on Friday.

The kidnapped engineer and his staffs were engaged in the construction of Bishnupur-Tupul road (50.80 km), a Rs 114.70 crore project of the Union ministry of development of northeast region (DoNER) funded by Asian Development Bank.

Police were yet to ascertain the outfit of the armed miscreants and motive behind the kidnapping. This is not the first time armed militants have kidnapped officials and workers of companies engaged in developmental projects in the state, particularly in hill districts in connection with extortion. The company (ABCI Infrastructures Private Ltd) engaged  in construction of roads in interior hill districts of the state has faced kidnapping of its officials and workers on many occasions.
