Former MLA Rokonicha Kuotsu passed away at his residence in Medziphema on Tuesday after a prolonged illness. He was 73. The funeral was held on April 17. Born in the year 1944, Rokonicha had served as Member of Nagaland Legislative Assembly for six terms. He contested from 5 Ghaspani II Assembly Constituency in 1974 from UDF party and subsequently elected as Deputy Speaker on March 17, 1975. 

He was elected to the 4th Assembly in 1977 from UDF party; elected to the 5th Assembly in 1982 from NNDP; elected to the 6th Assembly in 1987 on NNDP ticket; elected to the 9th Assembly in 1998 from INC party and appointed as Minister of State for Local Self Government & Wasteland Development. Again, he was elected to the 10th Assembly in 2003 from INC party and remained as MLA. 

Before entering into active politics, late Rokonicha had served in various capacities as president, Chakhroma Student’s Conference, 1967-69; joint secretary, Angami Public Organisation, 1973 and assistant teacher, GHS, Kohima, 1972-73. 


Governor: Nagaland Governor, PB Acharya, has expressed sadness at the demise of Rokonicha, former Minister of Nagaland and said that the people of Nagaland have lost a tall leader and a great human being in the demise of late Rokonicha. In a condolence message, the Governor stated that late Rokonicha, who served the people of Nagaland in various capacities, would be remembered fondly by all. Acharya conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the members of the bereaved family and prayed to Almighty God to grant strength and solace to bear the irreparable loss.

NLA speaker: Expressing grief at the demise of the former MLA, Rokonicha, the Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) speaker Vikho-o Yhoshu said he knew the late leader to be a humble and dynamic leader who worked diligently for the welfare and uplift of his Constituency and for the people of Nagaland. 

In a condolence message, the speaker on behalf of the Members of the 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly conveyed heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Sonei-ii Kuotsu, children and family members. 

NLA speaker also prayed that the Almighty God grant them solace and comfort at this hour of grief. 

CM: Nagaland chief minister, Neiphiu Rio, has expressed deep shock and pain over the demise of former minister Rokonicha and said that in his demise, the people of the state have lost a kind soul, an amiable person and a veteran leader whose absence would be deeply felt.

In a condolence message, Rio said he had the privilege of working with late Rokonicha in the Government. Besides being a colleague, Rio said late Rokonicha was an elder brother to him. “His gentle demeanour, good nature, simplicity and humility were his greatest attributes,” the chief minister said. Rio also said that late Rokonicha was one of the longest serving leaders from the Angami community in Dimapur area who served the people throughout his life and made many contributions towards the uplift of society particularly the down-trodden sections. 

The chief minister conveyed deepest condolences to all the loved ones of the bereaved family and prayed that they would find comfort in God’s Word as they deal with this great loss.

LoP: Leader of Opposition and former chief minister TR Zeliang has expressed sadness at the demise of Rokonicha Kuotsu and said his service to the community in various capacities over the years was commendable. 

In a condolence message, Zeliang said late Rokonicha’s election to the Nagaland Legislative assembly for a total of six terms was a testimony to his illustrious political career and leadership quality. A veteran and a well-known name in the political circle of the state, the leader of opposition said late Rokonicha has been an inspiration and a treasured guide to fellow politicians and a respectable man in the society.  

Zelaing said late Rokonicha’s untimely demise today was a great loss to the Naga people. Former chief minister also extended heartfelt condolences and prayed to Almighty God to grant solace to the members of the bereaved family.

MP Lok Sabha: Member of Parliament (MP) Lok Sabha, Tokheho Yepthomi, has expressed sorrow over the death of former MLA Rokonicha, saying his demise has created a vacuum in Naga society.

In a condolence message, MP Lok Sabha, Tokheho Yepthomi, said the contribution made by late Rokonicha for the welfare of Naga people as member of Legislative Assembly would be remembered for times to come.

Describing late leader as “a humble man”, Tokheho said he had the pleasure to work with him as members of Nagaland Legislative Assembly form 1998 to 2008.  MP also recalled late Rokonicha’s long and distinguished service for the people of Nagaland in various government and non-government capacities, which he fulfilled with integrity and humility. 

Tokheho also conveyed his condolences to members of the bereaved family and prayed that Almighty God give courage to the family members to overcome this hour of grief.

NDPP: Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) has expressed grief over the demise of veteran Naga politician Rokonicha Kuotsu and said the Nagas in general and the Tenyimia group of Nagas in particular have lost a towering leader in his passing away.

In a condolence message, NDPP president Chingwang Konyak said late Rokonicha was “undisputedly the tallest leader of the Chakhro Angami area” and was loved and respected by all communities of the area. “Soft spoken and genial, he was very approachable which made him a very popular personality both in politics and society,” Konyak said.

NDPP president on behalf of the rank and file of the party conveyed heartfelt condolences to te bereaved family members and prayed that the Almighty grant them comfort and solace at this hour of grief.

ExPAN: Ex-Parliamentarian Association of Nagaland (Ex-PAN) has expressed shock at the sudden demise of former minister Rokonicha and said that with his passing away people of the state have lost a great leader as well as statesmen.

In a condolence message, Ex-PAN president Sulangthung H Lotha and general secretary S Supongmeren Jamir described late leader as “a humble, dedicated and grassroots political leader and a man of principal” who give his entire life for the service of his people. Ex-Pan said his political career was the best example of a true Naga leader.

Ex-PAN also shared the pain with the bereaved family members at this hour of grief and sorrow. The association prayed that the Almighty God grant the departed soul rest in eternal peace. 

CGBU: Chakhroma GBs’ Union (CGBU) has expressed shock at the sudden demise of former MLA, Rokoneicha and said the passing of “our leader” has created a huge void which would be impossible to be filled. 

In a condolence message, CGBU president Thepfukedo Kuotsu and general secretary Atso Gwizan said the late leader contributed much to the society during his lifetime. “A tall figure among the people of Chakhroma in particular and the Nagas in general, he had served and contributed much to the society for which he will be fondly remembered,” CGBU stated. 

The union also bid adieu to the late leader and prayed that God grant eternal rest to the departed soul and give comfort to the bereaved family.

MTYO, MTMK: Medziphema Town Youth Organisation (MTYO) and Medziphema Town Mechü Krotho (MTMK) have conveyed their deepest condolences at the demise of Rokonicha Kuotsu.

In a condolence message, MTYO president Asazo Talie and MTMK president Akhoto Kuotsu said that late Rokonicha was one senior most public leader who exemplified true Christian belief throughout his life and had tirelessly worked for uplift the people of Medziphema region. MTMK and MTYO also prayed that God be with the bereaved family at this hour of sorrow.

NDPP 5 Ghaspani-II A/C: Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) 5 Ghaspani-II A/C has expressed grief at the sudden demise of Former minister Rokonicha Kuotsu.

In a condolence message, NDPP 5 Ghaspani-II A/C president, Dosau Kuotsu, and general secretary, Tokihe Zhimomi, stated that Rokonicha was one of the senior most public leaders “who walked the talk in all his endeavour.” The signatories stated that his “unmatched dedication” and zeal to work for the welfare of the people defined his social leadership capability. They said that his demise has left a void in their midst, but prayed that God grant solace to the bereaved family to continue with his legacy.
