Faith based orgns urged to suspend mass gatherings

Special action group (SAG) on COVID-19, constituted by the state government to monitor the situation, has appealed to the faith-based organisations (FBOs) to suspend mass gatherings and even postpone weddings till the virus was contained.

The principal secretary and Home commissioner, Abhijit Sinha, who heads the SAG, made this appeal during an emergency meeting with FBOs in the secretariat conference hall here Thursday.

Briefing on the virus, Sinha explained how the infection was spread across different nations through carriers. He said that the only way to fight the virus was through personal hygiene.

Sinha said that no positive cases had been reported in the state or north eastern region till date. He reminded that state government was taking all precautions to control the possible spread of disease. He also informed that screening of passengers at Dimapur railway station and various entry points have already started besides Dimapur Airport.

Asserting that the virus was highly infectious and could be easily spread at community gatherings and other crowded places, Sinha requested the participants to minimize mass gatherings.

Health and Family Welfare principal director Dr. V. Suokhrie said the virus was very rapid mainly due to poor hygiene and urged FBOs to inform their members to be aware and maintain good hygienic practices. Dr. Suokhrie also appealed to the citizens to follow standard guidelines that were issued by the government.

The church leaders appreciated the government and the department for putting all efforts to ensure the wellbeing of the citizens  and assured to extend cooperation. Kohima Town Baptist Pastors Fellowship president, Rev. Kevichalie, also informed the Sunrise service held on Easter Sunday at Kohima WW-II Memorial was cancelled due to outbreak of COVID-19.
