A day after the “rarest of rare” summer cyclone Fani ravaged parts of Odisha, the death toll on Saturday rose to 12. A massive restoration-and-relief work was launched on war-footing on Saturday across 10,000 villages and urban areas, officials said.

Over 25 lakh families in Odisha are still without electricity as Cyclone Fani destroyed power infrastructure across coastal districts in the state. Around 2,000 emergency workers, along with civil society organisations, personnel of the NDRF, the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) and one lakh officials, were engaged in the restoration work, Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik said.

Hundreds of engineers and technicians were working to restore power supply, the officials said.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narandra Modi will be visiting Odisha on Monday (May 6) to take stock of the situation. In the wake of Cyclone Fani reaching West Bengal, Modi also discussed the situation with West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi.
