Commissioner and secretary, Horticulture, Y. Kikheto Sema asked the farmers not to fully depend on the government and concentrate in getting subsidies alone but work with dedication and hardwork. “It is your farm and you have to give your full dedication and hardwork”, he told the farmers.

According to district horticulture officer, Zunheboto,  I.Chubatoshi, the commissioner made this statement while interacting with  the officials and farmers in Zunheboto on October 3.

On marketing prospects, Kikheto told the farmers that the department was trying to find a market linkage and will try to find a way where middlemen would not exploit the farmers with low rates of buying their produces.

He also visited Kiwi and Cardamom plantations at Awotsakili village under Zunheboto district.

Also while visiting the Kiwi farms, the farmers apprised the Horticulture officials that they were using Israel technology of Drip Irrigation in the farms which was not helping much and appealed the government to assist them in constructing permanent structures with iron pipes and wires for the vines of Kiwi to grow and expand.

The farmers said that they were using bamboos for the vines to climb but have to construct every year.

To this, Kikheto told the farmers that using Drip Irrigation was a government policy but said that if the farmers were not finding it useful then the department would discuss their problems and concerns with the government.

The commissioner and secretary was accompanied by I. Chubatoshi and retired Transport Commissioner, Hosheto Achumi who is assisting the farmers in Kiwi and Cardamom plantations in his native village, Awotsakili.
