Farmers trained on SPREAD in Guwahati

A two-day inter-state farmers’ training on Society for Promotion of Rural Economy and Agricultural Development (SPREAD), Northeast was organised by Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) on June 27-28 at Sonapur, Guwahati.
A press release by ATMA stated that the training was organised with an aim to enrich farmer knowledge on the beneficial aspects of growing local crops using locally available resources and to encourage organic farming.
The team comprised of DPD, ATMA Dimapur, Janet Chishi, ATM ATMA Dimapur, Sentibenla Pongener and 11 progressive farmers from the different RD Blocks under Dimapur district. 
The release said that SPREAD-NE was established by farmer, Samir Bordoloi (general secretary and ecological farming expert) with a vision to facilitate transformation of agricultural practices from chemo-centric to organic production mode through skill up-gradation to enhance farm resource efficiency.
On the first day of the training, Samir Bordoloi introduced SPREAD-NE to the farmers as a non- profit organization which works under the theme: “local people, local food and local economy”. 
He emphasized on how local ethnic food could reach the cities and eventually improve the economy. 
Samir also gave a detailed explanation on how a bamboo bio char works as great fertilizer for plants and how it is a good way to store and utilize carbon to assist in plant development. On the second day, a hands-on training on bio char fertilizer preparation, vermicompost preparation in a box and preparation of vermicompost in a pit was conducted.
