A full -fledged regional office of FCI will be opened in Imphal, Union minister of consumer affairs, food & public distribution Ram Vilas Paswan said on Friday.

Paswan who arrived in Imphal on Friday on his two-day visit in the state was addressing a press  conference at Classic Grande, Imphal.

He said that the full-fledged FCI region office will start functioning from January 2020.

Paswan stated that there was a Central policy for procuring essential commodities during times of natural calamities and said that was no need to worry for  people of the state who were experiencing drought  this Rabi crop season.

“There is enough buffer stock of almost 56, 000 tonnes,” he said.

He further highlighted that there were already FCI godowns in nine districts out of the 16 districts of Manipur.  There must be a godown in every district, whether an FCI godown or state godown or even a private godown , he added.

Paswan denied any hike in the prices of essential commodities – rice, sugar etc. in the past few months and it was at a general level overall in almost all the states of the country.

He then asked the public of Manipur to avail of the benefits of Prime Minister’s Ayushman Bharat Yojana, a Central sponsored scheme meant for poor people of the country.

Earlier, the Union minister chaired a review meeting on FCI operations, PDS computerization, procurement and other related matters of the North Eastern states.

During the meeting, the Union minister requested all states of the region for their active participation in creation of new storage capacities by identifying or offering suitable lands for construction of godowns.

It will help the production and PDS operations go smoothly in the states of region, he said.

While reviewing the position of storage capacity, its utilization, allocation under NFSA and lifting of foodgrains, the Union minister directed that Depot Online System of FCI should be implemented in the entire North Eastern states at the earliest.

Among others, the review meeting was attended by chairman and managing director of FCI RP Singh, executive director (procurement and sales) Anurag Gupta, executive director FCI (Northeast zone) AK Sinha and executive ditrctors of FCI from Shillong, Itanagar, Guwahati and Dimapur besides state CAF & PD minister Karam Shyam. Taking part in the news conference, state CAF & PD minister Karam Shyam informed that a proposal for setting up six new FCI godowns in Manipur have been sent to the Centre.

Under the NFSA scheme, the state was supposed to get both rice and wheat foodgrains equally from the Centre but as Manipur is a state where the staple food is rice, the state gets mainly rice alloted from the Centre, he stated.

Soon after his arrival, the Union minister proceeded to Bishnupur district where he along with state CAF&PD minister inaugurated an FCI godown for the district.
