Tripura police has filed an FIR against top CPI-M leaders comprising Deputy Speaker Pabitra Kar and former ministers Badal Chowdhury and Ratan Bhowmick for holding rallies in the state without permission.

Police said the FIR was lodged against the three CPI-M leaders for holding the rallies against ‘murder of democracy’ in Tripura here on Tuesday without taking permission from police.

West Tripura superintendent of police, Ajit Pratap Singh said the case against Kar was registered under section 82 of Tripura Police Act and CRPC 107 (security for keeping peace) for holding the rally here.

Cases were lodged under the same sections against Chowdhury and Bhowmick for holding rallies at Udaipur, the district headquarters of Gomati district yesterday.

Kar said the rally was part of the national program of the Left parties to protest against the “murder of democracy” in Tripura and West Bengal and the police permission was denied even after it was sought.

“This is an act of intolerance and undemocratic functioning of the Tripura government,” Kar told reporters and alleged that the Udaipur rally was attacked by BJP workers in the presence of police.

At least 25 CPI-M supporters were injured in the attack, he claimed.

“In the name of peace and tranquility police are not allowing opposition parties to hold any rallies,” he said.

Recently opposition INPT filed a case in the Tripura High Court against the administration after it was denied permission to hold a protest rally here, Kar said.

Earlier, the CPI-M state committee had accused ruling BJP of mobilising police to destroy the “democratic ambience” in the state and perpetrate violence.

In the four months of BJP-IPFT rule, four CPI(M) members and leaders were murdered, a large number of party members and supporters were attacked, around 750 offices of the CPI(M) and its trade union were burnt, ransacked or captured, he claimed.
