In yet another fire tragedy, a government quarter belonging to Home department, was burned down here at Middle PWD (MPWD) Colony, Saturday, taking the cases of fire incidents in the state capital to three in just the month of December.

Although no casualties were reported in today’s incident, the fire which broke out from a suspected short circuit, destroyed properties worth close to Rs 18 lakhs while rendering the occupants homeless.

According to the officer in-charge (OC) of Fire Station (South), Kohima, Lhouliebeizo Angami, the station received the fire call at 11:23 a.m when the station was busy preparing for advent Christmas celebration.

A total of 14 firemen from Fire Station (South) were pushed into action along with an addition of 6 firemen from the Fire Station (North), thus bringing the fire under control and averting the spread of fire to the neighbouring houses.

Voicing concerns over the sudden spike in fire incidents, the OC said he was keeping the station on alert as with the approaching festivities, people were decorating their houses with electrical lightings without the help of professional electricians.

He informed the general public to follow necessary safety measures in order to avoid such tragedies. He further informed the public to call 0370-2222952 or 762-897-8433 in case of any emergencies.

MPWD chairman along with colony elders who were present at the site of the incident lauded the fire tenders for their quick response and timely intervention in subduing the fire.

He further acknowledged neighbours and representatives from the other two colonies of PWD for coming and helping out the distressed family.
