Food safety officials in Kohima and Wokha district conducted inspection of bakeries, restaurants and other food facilities in their respective district headquarters on Thursday.

In a press release, chief medical officer (CMO) Kohima, Dr. Ritu Thurr, stated that food safety officials inspected two bakeries – Mums Bakery and Best Bakery – located at Merhülietsa Colony, Kohima on July 26, 2018.

During the course of inspection, CMO said hygiene and sanitary condition were found lacking. The two bakeries were served with an improvement notice under Section 32 of Food Safety and Standards Act 2006 by the designated officer cum CMO.  CMO asserted that follow-up inspection drive would continue in other bakeries, restaurants and hotels within the district for safety of public health and well-being.

In Wokha, the office of the chief medical officer (CMO) Wokha in collaboration with the administration and police department Wokha inspected bakeries, restaurants and other food outlets. The inspection was conducted to check whether the food facilities comply with the hygiene standards and baking practices as laid down in the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

The inspection team during the drive found out that most of the bakeries lacked hygiene and were prepared under unsanitary conditions. Food handlers in restaurants were seen working without proper headgear, gloves and aprons.

The inspection team also seized 17 kg of expired baking ingredients and 14 kg of cookies prepared under unhygienic conditions, which were later disposed.

Notice was served on two baking units for improvement within a month, failing which their licences would be suspended.

Meanwhile, the shops and food handlers have been directed to obtain FSSAI license and medical fitness certificate from the CMO office Wokha.

CMO Wokha has warned that similar inspection would be carried out from time to time.

Health department has expressed appreciation to the district administration and the police department Wokha for their active participation.
