Foothill Unit-Dimapur Ao Lanur Telongjem (Dimapur Ao Youth Organization) Thursday said it was “alarmed” by the rampant threat and extortion/illegal taxation/random collection of money by miscreants from the public who were undertaking construction works at Aoyim village and Naga United village area.

In a press release, Foothill Unit-DALT president Tuden Jamir and general secretary Monglie Aier claimed that several miscreants were on the prowl targeting landowners and construction workers by way of extorting money as ‘Tax’ for NPGs.

The modus operandi of the miscreants, the Foothill Unit-DALT claimed was to target construction workers residing in the area of construction and demand money from them as ‘Tax.’ It stated that there had been a number of instances involving those miscreants who snatched away mobile phones and belongings of construction workers.

Stating that threat of extortion has become very serious and endemic, Foothill unit said there have been numerous instances where construction works had to be brought to an abrupt halt due to the construction workers, mostly non locals, quitting the work and leaving the area out of fear.

It said that those miscreants had even gone to the extent of demanding money directly from individual/landowners. “There have been cases when the same miscreant(s) have demanded money/extortion while taking the name of multiple Naga Political Groups,” the unit claimed. It also claimed that many landowners were abandoning work due to inability to pay extortion demand and out of fear.

Foothill Unit-DALT said it was “outraged” that such practice of harassment, threat and daylight robbery were being meted to the public who were building homes in their own land by own fellow Naga.

Vowing to fight such menace with every resource available, the Foothill Unit-DALT has urged every right thinking individual and organization to condemn such acts and join hands to get rid of such threat to the society.

Further, the Unit also affirmed ‘One Government One Tax’ resolution of ACAUT Nagaland which was reaffirmed by PAC-Naga Council Dimapur during the public rally on October 31, 2018.
