Foreign launch

By Nagaland Post | Publish Date: 8/27/2018 11:41:44 AM IST

Rahul has been on a four-day trip to the UK and Germany to address a select group of mainly Indian diaspora and NRIs with the aim of soliciting campaign funds . As it is, wherever Rahul goes and whatever he days, elicits a great deal of interest from both well wishers and critics, mostly the latter. Travelling through Germany and the United Kingdom, on a mission to launch himself as a rising star on the world geo-political stage, Rahul fired ( and mis-fired) on multiple cylinders across a wide spectrum of topics, ranging from Islamic State to RSS, Doka La to demonetisation, lynching to women’s rights and farms to factories. Rahul’s main target was quite obviously Narendra Modi- the prime minister who started name calling of political rivals while on foreign trip. Rahul spared no opportunity in attacking Modi by accusing him of centralising all powers in his hand such as in bypassing the finance minister and cabinet on demonetisation. He also said the GST was flawed but pushed through in haste and as a result of which, along with demonetisation, was a double whammy for the economy. Rahul also said Modi reduced his foreign minister Sushma Swaraj to the role of only issuing visas instead of negotiating foreign agreements. He also said for Modi, the Doklam issue was an event and not a serious developing issue that needed continuous monitoring and response. All in all, Rahul said Modi has no strategy for governance except as to centralise all powers in his hands(PMO). One note of caution that Rahul needs to remember, is that ambitious opposition leaders like Mamata and Mayawati may not be very open to his leadership. It could be a ticklish issue if the Congress manages to win 150+ votes in 2019 but out of question if the party manages a two-digit figure. A number of opposition parties may also not like Rahul Gandhi to become the prima donna of the Opposition by default. All this might change the contours of the proposed mahagathbandhan of non-NDA opposition. It is difficult to understand the purpose of Rahul’s trip that came without others having much idea. All efforts of the Congress are going into building an international profile for Rahul Gandhi to compensate for his image deficit at home. However, even the recent remarks by Rahul lacked substance and clarity though they may have sounded good for the gallery. His attempt to create sound bytes over exclusion of Dalits and low castes led him to make a bizarre explanation that ISIS was birthed by those who were excluded then driven to frustrations. While attacking Modi for rising unemployment, Rahul claimed that while China created 50,000 jobs a day, it was only 450 in India. Rahul kept repeating the dangers of government’s failure to provide a vision to a section of the people, yet till now he has not elaborated on his vision. Rahul has to recast party’s identity, improve its image, credibility and acceptance, find funds to take on the cash-rich BJP and win the battle of perception against the BJP. All these are herculean tasks and merely attacking Modi will not bring victory for Rahul and neither campaigning on foreign soil.
