Forest Watch Towers/Forest view points, were constructed at two separate locations along the way to Shurho peak by the Kigwema village community sponsored by the Forest department.
DIPR reports that during a routine inspection on July 17 at Kigwema village by the staff of Kohima Forest Division, DFO Kohima, Rongsenlemla Imchen appreciated the efforts of the community for forest and wild life conservation.
She stated that the main objectives of constructing the watch towers were mainly to help in protecting the forest and its inhabitants and also to contribute to the aesthetics of the area.
The department also thanked the Kigwema Biodiversity and Wildlife Management Committee, the Village Council, the Youth organization, women organization and the churches for their collaborative responsibility in the community conservation effort.  She said that from both the watch towers a person could get a glimpse of around 60% of the Kigwema community forest including areas near Shurho Peak and Mt. Japfü which is home to tallest rhododendrons and the very rare bird Blyth’s Tragopan respectively. In addition at least 15 villages are visible “and perceptible” from the towers.
On behalf of the local functionaries of the village, Vibeilie Sale, president Kigwema Youth Organization thanked the department for the initiative and also for creating environmental awareness in the village and said that the community would put in all its effort to protect and preserve the environment. The trekking & inspection program was attended by DFO Kohima, Kohima Range Staff, Kigwema Youth Organisation and local functionaries.
