Fourth of July

 On July 4, the world’s greatest super power, both in terms of economy and military- the United States of America-celebrates its 245th independence day on July 4, which is popularly known as the Fourth of July. The day also commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence from Great Britain. It was on July 4, 1776 that the second Continental Congress in the US adopted the Declaration of Independence, declaring that the 13 American colonies were no longer part of the British Empire. In practice, if July 4 is a Saturday (general holiday), it is observed on Friday, July 3. Again, if July 4 is a Sunday, it is observed on Monday, July 5. The core value of the Declaration f Independence states : “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” However, if there is anything that contradicts American commitment to international human rights and democracy, it is on how it deals with the same issue at home. The original inhabitants of America- known as ‘Red Indians’ have been disposed of their ancestral lands and pushed to the margins of society. According to a report by the US Civil Rights Commission, native Americans still suffer higher rates of poverty, poor educational achievement, substandard housing, and higher rates of disease and illness. Native Americans continue to rank at or near the bottom of nearly every social, health, and economic indicator. Native Americans living on tribal lands do not have access to the same services and programs available to other Americans, even though the government has a binding trust obligation to provide them. The Declaration of Independence as it may, unfortunately does not include the native Americans who have been corralled inside reservations. The USA continues to be a champion of democracy and has been a beacon of light for the entire globe in this regard. America has fought wars in defence of democratic rights of other people even if these were on far away lands. The US prides itself with being the home of the brave. It is not a tall claim; the USA helped defeat the might of the Nazi Germany, colonial Japan and Fascist Italy during the Second World War. It also acted as bulwark against Stalinist hegemony and Moaist expansionism. The US continues to defend South Korea, Taiwan and Philippines. There is no country like the US which has sacrificed the lives of thousands of its soldiers to fight and die for the defence of countries under attack In the post-Vietnam war era, the USA has to contend with fighting against a new kind of war on a large scale without limitations and without boundaries. The war against terror continues, after the sleeping giant was rudely shaken from its sleep on September 11, 2000. Today, China has taken a quantum leap over all other developed nations in technology and economy. Soon China will surpass America economically and even militarily. China is the greatest threat to the free world and America could face one of its biggest challenges in the years to come.
