Eintracht Frankfurt made a significant step towards Bundesliga safety as they beat Werder Bremen 3-0 on Wednesday night.

Andre Silva’s header from close range gave the visitors the lead on the hour mark before Stefan Ilsanker scored with his first touch of the match as the game entered the final ten minutes.

With the contest in the closing stages, Ilsanker grabbed his second despite being on the pitch for just eight minutes and 56 seconds as he found the net from yards out.

Bremen made four changes to the side that beat Schalke last time out and a new-look forward line failed to create real opportunities to open the scoring in the first-half - although a lengthy VAR stoppage did deny them a penalty.

The Frankfurt defender clearly handled the ball in the box as he applied pressure to Davy Klassen, but a VAR check that took significantly longer than it should have showed that Klassen was offside in the build-up.

The second-half flowed in a similar fashion to the first and it was the turn of Frankfurt to be denied by the VAR. Dominik Kohr’s strike was chalked off after he was shown to be offside moments before receiving the ball.

Shortly after, Silva gave the visitors their lead as he connected with Filip Kostic’s cross. There was little the goalkeeper could do as the header sailed into the net.

The substitutions were present in the final 15 minutes and one of those was Ilsanker - who replaced Sebastian Rode. Just 17 seconds separated him running onto the pitch and finding the back of the net from a corner.

That goal was a significant one as it marked the fastest goal scored by a substitute in the Bundesliga since the beginning of detailed data collection in 2004/05.

The result was secured, but Ilsanker grabbed his second of the contest with another close range header. The 31-year-old had played 86 Bundesliga games prior to this meeting with Bremen although he had never scored.

With the result, Werder Bremen remain stuck in the relegation zone in 17th, meanwhile Eintracht Frankfurt jump to 11th.

“Based on the second-half performance it is of course a deserved victory for Frankfurt. We played very well in the first half but we made too many mistakes after half time,” Bremen’s head coach Florian Kohfeldt said.

“Both teams wanted to win today. Bremen took over but after the restart we grabbed the reins and paved the way for the win,” Frankfurt’s head coach Adi Hutter said.
