The Friends of the Jesuits, Shillong on Thursday requested Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma to make a strong appeal to the central government to immediately release Fr. Stan Swami on humanitarian ground and squash all the charges framed against him.  In a memorandum to chief minister Sangma, the Friends of the Jesuits, Shillong along with all the catholic community of Meghalaya and on behalf of all the tribal population of India also expressed their “deep sense of dismay at the utter silence of the Meghalaya government on the arrest of Fr. Stan Swami” by the National Investigation Agency in connection with the controversial Bhima Koregaon-Elgar Parishad case.

“The action of the agency is highly deplorable to say the least considering that an 83 year old has been taken to Mumbai in the midst of the global pandemic and against the Jharkhand government’s directive that those above 60 years of age may not venture in public. Fr. Stan had made it clear to the officials that he is not in a position to undertake such long travel considering his age and the pandemic and is willing to subject himself to questioning over video conferencing,” the memorandum read.
