Global IDD prevention day observed

Global Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD) prevention day was observed in Kohima and Mokokchung under the theme “Consume iodised salt; Protect mental & physical health” on October 21. IDD is a global issue and October 21 has been marked to generate awareness and to continue working to prevent iodine deficiency disorder. 

Kohima: In Kohima, the programme was held at TM Government Higher Secondary School (TMGHSS), Kohima.
A press release from NIDDCP, DH&FW stated that, Dr. Hezo, ZLO, Kohima stated that iodine deficiency leads to abnormalities known as Iodine Deficiency Disorder (IDD) which includes goitre, mental retardation, growth retardation etc. Pointing out that the human body requires a daily supply of 150 micrograms of iodine, which has to be obtained from the food one consumes, he advised the students to consume good quality iodised salt. State programme officer (NIDDCP) Dr. Akuo Sorhie said that iodine was important for the human body and that some vital organs needed  a daily dose of iodine for it to function normally. 
Pledged to procure and consume iodised salt was led by Vitsonuo, headmistress of TMGHSS. Neito Dzüvichü, teacher, TMGHSS delivered the welcome address and vote of thanks by Khovetolu Vese, lab assistant, NIDDCP in the programme chaired by Nungsang Longchar, technical officer, NIDDCP.
Mokokchung: The day was also observed at the Government High School Dilong (GHSD), Mokokchung.
According to DPMU, chief medical office Mokokchung,  Dr Ayangla Saku DPO (UIP&RCH) in her address said that iodine deficiency disorder was incurable but it can be prevented easily by regular consumption of iodised salt. She also said that everyone should be aware of this preventable disease and spread the awareness in the community. During the fortnight ASHA will visit every household for testing the iodised salt.
