Grenade blast outside Mnp Assembly; two CRPF injured

A grenade blast occurred near the Manipur Legislative Assembly Complex in Imphal injuring at least two CRPF personnel on Friday.

Though police said unknown miscreants hurled the hand grenade towards the CRPF personnel on duty there, local residents expressed their doubts..

The hand grenade went off at the premises of a local youth club (Thangmeiband Improvement Club) nearby the main entrance gate of the Manipur Legislative Assembly in Imphal’s Chingmeirong this around 5.15pm on Friday.

The injured CRPF personnel were identified as head constable Jitenchandra (41) from Assam and constable Joydev (37) from West Bengal . The duo belonged to B-coy of 87th battalion CRPF.While Jitenchandra was hit by splinters on his left leg,  Joydev was hit  on his shoulder.  Both of them were rushed to RIMS hospital where doctors attending them said there are currently out of danger.

The duo were among the CRPF personnel deployed at Manipur Legislative Assembly Complex  since the last few days after COCOMI’s alert campaign on Naga peace talks intensified. The hand grenade went off while they were reportedly at the veranda of club building.

Locals said that CRPF personnel deployed would  stay inside the club premises during their duties since they were deployed there as additional force.BSF guards the state Assembly and the CRPF personnel were deployed on the main road that passes on the southern side of the Assembly complex as additional force.

Police who rushed to the site conducted a spot inquiry during which the lever of the grenade was recovered from the premises of the club building. 

Friday’s grenade attack came amidst tightened security measures in place in Imphal and its outskirt after a series of blasts in Imphal inflicted injuries to security forces and police personnel

At least five policemen including an additional SP and one civilian were severely injured after a bomb blast in Thangal Bazar area of Imphal in Manipur on November 5 morning. 

Earlier, three BSF personnel were injured by an impact of an IED blast at Telipati in Imphal East district on the night of November 2.

The series of blasts coupled with people’s stir demanding disclosure of the details agreed upon in the last round of Centre and Naga rebel groups, a good number of Central security forces are being deployed in almost all the sensitive areas of the capital city.
