State Health & Family Welfare (H&FW) department, considering the unfolding challenges, has issued guidelines on rational use of COVID-19 testing for strict adherence and compliance by all stakeholders with immediate effect.

The guidelines stated that testing criteria would be in conformity with ICMR and state SOP and would not be modified under any circumstances unless with the approval of competent authority.

It stated that the priority for testing would be given to high risk contacts (primary and direct) or symptomatic cases. All other cases including low risk contacts, the guidelines said would apply for slot for sampling and testing to the district health authority through Phone/WhatsApp/Email in order to avoid overcrowding at the sampling site.

Further, it stated that type of testing to be done would be decided by the attending health personnel, adding that no person would demand the type of testing. As per the guidelines, the test result would be provided depending on the case load of the testing lab.

All person from whom sample were collected would remain in self isolation till their result was made available, it added.

The guidelines also stated that no person would insist on retest, if the test result was ‘truly positive’ by Rapid Antigen Test or ‘truly negative’ by Truenat. Retests would only be done on grounds of high clinical suspicion and correlation by the attending health personnel, the guidelines stated.

The department stated that in order to sustain the fight against COVID-19 pandemic, it was pertinent to utilize the resources optimally, effectively and rationally.
