Harmful effects of tobacco highlighted

With an aim to create awareness among the residents, Angamimiapfu Mechu Krotho (AMK) and DLCC organized a day-long programme on harmful effects of tobacco under the theme “choose life not tobacco” was held on April 16 at AMK building, Kohima. 

During the programme, resource persons highlighted on the ill effect of tobacco. 

A DIPR report stated that AMK president, Kevinourheno Seyie, who chaired the programme, said that smokeless tobacco has not only affected the health but also affects the economy. She said hard earned money is being wasted on tobacco. She therefore, called upon the people to quit tobacco for a healthy living and greener environment.

District Nodal Officer NTCP, Dr. Arenla Walling, who too spoke on the harmful effects of tobacco, said that tobacco consumption lead to oral cancers and other major diseases. She pointed out that India has the highest number of oral cancer cases in the world and 90% of oral cancers are tobacco related. In this regard, she urged the womenfolk present in the programme to spread the awareness in their concerned areas. She also thanked the AMK for their support and cooperation during various enforcement drives and trainings especially in the rural areas.

Also speaking in the programme, social worker NTCP, Achila Walling explained the various legal provisions under Cigarette and Other Tobacco Product Act (COPTA- 2003). She also reminded the gathering that smoking has been banned in all public places.

Participants from Chakhro Women Organization, Western Angami Women organization, Southern Angami Women organization and Northern Angami Women organization attended the programme.
