The Highway Area Sumi Students Union (HASSU) has appealed to the department of School Education and its advisor, to ensure strict adherence to the Right To Education (RTE) Act for the welfare of the student community.

A press release from HASSU president, Abovi K. Awomi stated that HASSU was disheartened and distraught to learn that many government institutions were charging admission and other fees from students, contrary to the provisions of the RTE Act.

The HASSU reminded the institutions charging fees about the RTE Act, by virtue of which no child shall be liable to pay any kind of fees or expenses which may prevent him or her from pursuing and completing elementary education. The HASSU said it was therefore a legal obligation to implement the fundamental child right as enshrined in Article 21A of the constitution, and in accordance with the provisions of the RTE Act.

The HASSU directed all government educational institutions within its jurisdiction to strictly comply with the RTE Act. Failing to adhere with the Act, HASSU said that the union would not remain a mute spectator.

In this regard the HASSU requested the advisor of School Education and the department to look into the matter on priority and asked for strict directives to be issued to all institutions.
