Hectic preparations underway for Poanglüm

Hectic preparation is underway for the Poanglüm mini hornbill festival of the Changs in Tuensang town, starting from January 13 till January 15 at Loyem Memorial Ground. 

A press release from Chang Khulei Setshang (CKS) and Poanglüm organizing committee media cell stated that, Changs will be celebrating the premium winter festival “Poanglüm” under the aegis of Chang Khulei Setshang (CKS) the Chang Tribal Council.

The preparation for this year mini hornbill festival started on January 7, wherein a row of 27 morungs by different major villages of Changs are under construction. The village unions based at Tuensang have taken up the responsibility of making their own village morungs. The Sangdak villagers were the first to complete the tradition house. For the house warming ritual and celebration, the villagers invited the president of CKS Nungsang Lemba, P. Ngamen Chang, the convenor of mini hornbill and Ebou Chang vice president of Chang Gazetted Officer’s Forum. Bamo Yemjong of Sangdak village exhorted a word of welcome to the guests and explained the house warming rituals in detail to the congregation present for the ritual. The other villages will also do their own house warming rituals after the completion of their traditional village house.

CM Chang, minister of Forest, Environment, Climate Change and Law & Justice, H. Khehovi Yepthomi, advisor, Tourism, Art and Culture, Kejong Chang, MLA. Toyang Chang, MLA, DIG 7th Sector, Assam Rifles, Tuensang, Alim Bin Beshang, senior assistant transport officer, civil secretariat, Kohima and Moba Chang, the winner of Naga king chilli competition, Nagaland Hornbill Festival, will be the patrons and special guests. President of Sumi Hoho, Hekhushe Shikhu will be the tribal guest on the concluding day. 

Some of the festive competition will include traditional greased bamboo pole climbing, tug of war, Hapbung Kainong (Naga karting), stilt bamboo race, traditional fire making, king chilli eating competition, pork fat eating competition, Chang strongest man competition and winding of wool for women. Yimchunger Cultural Troupe, Sumi Cultural Troupe, Sangtam Cultural Troupe, Khiamniungan Cultural Troupe and the cultural troupes of all the Chang villages will participate in the cultural events. The various local bands and artistes, such as Naga Incarnate, Saksi Evolution, Chale Kaonyu, Aoyim Sem, Himjan Shanen, Lole Wet are well set for the Musical night. The 3rd edition of Miss Chang Beauty Pageant competition will also be held as part of the event under the theme “Thesa” which will be organized by Changsao Thangjam Setshang. 

Mini hornbill festival will be celebrated under the theme “Waza”.  This event is sponsored by the government of Nagaland and is an opportunity given to the local people who are not able to witness the Nagaland hornbill festival of Kisama. Tuensang is the only district in Nagaland with four major tribes namely, Chang, Khiamniungan, Sangtam and Yimchunger. It is befitting to have a common festival organized in order to affirm and maintain the bond of brotherhood. 

CKS and the organizing committee of Poanglüm has invited the presence of all the public of Tuensang Town, all HoDs and government officials under Tuensang town, the tribal leaders, the village councils of all the Chang villages, all the Chang unions of different places and well wishers to be part of this great festival.
