A mother oriental pied hornbill, which enclosed itself inside artificial best box at Nagaland Zoological Park (NZP), Rangapahar in April 2018, emerged with one chick on Tuesday.
In a press release, NZP Rangapahar director, Obed Bohovi Swu, said Nagaland Zoological Park had been attempting to breed hornbills in captivity for last five years, but was not successfully.
However, with the successful breeding of oriental pied hornbill, NZP director said Nagaland Zoological Park, Rangapahar achieved another milestone, adding that it has given park authorities a lot of knowledge about their behaviour.
He said hornbills have a very unique nesting behaviour. After mating the female goes inside the nest and plaster the opening of the nest cavity from inside leaving just a small opening wide enough to receive food from the male outside who feeds both the chicks and the mother till they emerge from the nest box, NZP director stated. Since Hornbills pair for life, he said the pair was expected to continue to breed in the park.
According to NZP director, the park was trying to identify other compatible pairs for breeding in the coming years and start a conservation breeding programme for oriental pied Hornbill in the Zoological Park.
