Ideology of terror

America’s war on terror, a term it has been using to raise Cain after 19 Islamic terrorists hijacked four civil airliners to carry out a ‘kamikaze-type’ suicide attacks on the Twin Towers on 9/11 and also jolted the complacent west to accept that terror has already arrived. The terrorists belong to the Al Qaeda group. Seventeen years ago, on September 11,2001 Islamic terrorists hijacked two jet planes- American Airlines flight 11 and United Airlines flight 175- and rammed them on to the famous Twin Towers of New York killing 2996 people and injuring more than 6000 others. In all, four planes were hijacked on that fateful morning of which American Airlines flight 77 was crashed into the Pentagon and the fourth, United Airlines flight 93 crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The horrific incident may have spurred a global response but nearly 17 years later, the fight has got bogged down in Afghanistan. Other parts of the globe continue to experience terror attacks but perhaps for the Americans, the ‘War On Terror’ is where its interest lies. Afghanistan and without saying, Pakistan are the two prime focus of US foreign and military policies since these two nations are the haunting ground of several Islamic terrorist organisation such as Al Qaeda, and Taliban. It was the most barbaric attack on unarmed and innocent civilians in aviation history which caused utter shock and horror all over the world. Actually, the terror that the USA is now forced to confront comes in the shape and form of Osama Bin Laden, who was killed in an operation by US Navy Seals in Abottabad Pakistan on May 2, 2011 and the Talibans. Both Osama and the Talibans were the creations of the US in its proxy fight against the then USSR’s occupation of Afghanistan. The US not only created a Frankenstein but also helped Pakistan to cement its relations with various terrorist groups fighting against the USSR forces in Afghanistan. Terror of the Islamic kind also jolted India when Pakistani terrorists belonging to Jammat-ud-Dawah (JuD), a front for the Lashkar-e- Taiba (LeT) terror group that carried out the deadly 2008 Mumbai attack. The JuD is led by Hafeez Saaed a Pakistani who continues to remain and roam free. The 9/11(New York) and 26/11(Mumbai) revealed the brutality and depths of derangement and depravity of terrorists while the evolution of this into thugs of ISIS exposed the ultimate rapacious and murderous frame of mind. Since 9/11 and as of 2011, there have been 119,044 anti-terror arrests and 35,117 convictions in 66 countries. By contrast, before 9/11 there were only a few hundred terrorism convictions each year. Within USA, the scars of 9/11 has left a deep scar on the psyche of a once loose, liberal and boastful Americans. The terrorist attack had also made most Americans wary of Islam and quite understandably so. However, the battle against terrorism is far from over so long as the free and liberal world remains divided on how to deal with and how to separate immigrants from terrorism or how to separate freedom of religion from freedom to use religion to spread terror ideology. Terrorism will continue not because of the Palestinian issue since terrorism has branched out like ISIS long ago. Those who use Islam to perpetrate terrorism are only doing so to exploit it for their own gain.
