A large number of street vendors in Imphal Sunday stormed police station after they were drove away by police for selling their wares on Imphal streets.
Some women streets vendors sustained injuries in police action. One of them was hospitalized, the vendors claimed.
A police officer said that vendors were evicted in compliance to a government order not to allow street vendors to sell their wares on the streets after 8 am in the morning and before 5 pm in the evening.
Protesting the eviction drive of the police, the street vendors have been trying to meet the chief minister since July 7. However, they were denied an appointment till date. Alleging the officials of the city police, who assured appointment with the chief minister to air their plights failed to initiate any action to fix the appointment, the women streets vendors stormed the city police station today.
The vendors confronted with the police personnel who cane-charged them in a bid to disperse them. In the melee, some women vendors sustained minor injuries. The women street vendors demanded the authority concerned to allow them to conduct their business in the usual manner until and unless they were provided an appropriate area.
