Imphal women vendors protest eviction

Protesting against their eviction, irate women vendors in Imphal on Friday laid siege to a police officer who was supervising the eviction drive. 

In compliance to a government order not to allow street vendors to sell their wares on the streets after 8 am in the morning and before 5 pm in the evening, police has been carrying eviction drive, particularly during the day time.

Today, when a city police team led by its office-in-charge carried out the drive asking the vendors to vacate the streets using loud speaker, streets vendors gathered themselves and protested against the eviction.

The women vendors converged from different parts laid siege to the police personnel including women personnel. 

While other police personnel were let to go, they kept the OC encircled at Shamu Makhong area of the Ema Keithel (Women market). 

After keeping the police officer under siege, they demanded apology from the police alleging that some police personnel used offensive language during the eviction drive.

Later, the OC was released after top officials of the state police department intervened by convincing the irate vendors. 

They demanded that the state government allow them to sell their wares during the day time.

The women vendors also claimed that nearly a month since the police conducted drive against them, they have suffered a lot. They said that they could not even sell their wares properly and for which their daily earnings have been badly affected.
