India records biggest single-day surge as total cases cross 17k

India has seen the biggest single-day spike in the number of coronavirus cases- 1,540 cases in the last 24 hours- which takes the total to 17,656, including 559 deaths, the Health Ministry data shows. Forty deaths were reported in the last 24 hours. 

So far, India has 14,255 active cases. There are also 77 foreign nationals who are affected by the virus.

During the press briefing on Monday evening, Lav Aggrawal from Health Ministry said that since the lockdown has got implemented, the doubling rate for the virus infection has seen a significant improvement. “The duration of doubling rate for coronavirus which was 3.4 days before lockdown is now 7.5 days,” he said.

Globally, the toll from the coronavirus pandemic crossed 1.66 lakh and more than 24.17 lakh declared cases have been found in 185 countries and territories since the disease first emerged in China late last year, according to the Johns Hopkins University tracker.
