India registers biggest COVID-19 spike

Positive cases inch towards 50k mark

A record number of new cases on Tuesday pushed the nationwide COVID-19 tally closer to the 50,000-mark and the death toll crossed 1,600 with over 200 more fatalities

The total number of novel coronavirus cases increased to 46,711 after 3,875 fresh Covid-19 cases emerged in the last 24 hours, according to the latest data from the Ministry of health and Family Welfare. The death toll in the country also rose by 194 to 1,583 since yesterday, it said.

As the country saw the highest single-day spike in the number of deaths in the last 24 hours, Health ministry joint secretary Lav Aggrawal, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Health said clarified: “We persuaded certain states as we were not receiving reports of cases/deaths on time from them, after which the cases have been reported and we have seen spike in death cases today,” and urged officials for timely report of deaths and cases in their states.

Globally, the number of novel coronavirus cases has surpassed 3.6 million infections while the death toll has shot past 250,000-mark, according to Johns Hopkins University data.

Nagaland: Results of 13 samples awaited

DIMAPUR, MAY 5 (NPN): Out of a total of 724 samples sent for testing from the State, results of 711 samples had been received and all tested negative, while results for the remaining 13 samples are awaited, principal secretary (home) Abhijit Sinha stated. Further, he informed that 1938 persons were screened on Tuesday, and 43 persons were under facility quarantine, he added.
