With the objectives to facilitate and simplify international trade procedures, Indian Customs has announced that it is shifting to faceless assessment of import consignments. Under this system,  it stated that import consignments reported for clearance in any port will be assigned for assessment to assessing officers posted in any other port by the Customs Automated System (CAS).

A press release by Assistant Commissioner Customs Preventive Division Dimapur Imkong Toshi Ao highlighted the advantages of Customs automated systems which help facilitate trade through the normalization of forms and documents, data standardization, simplification and computerization of Customs clearance procedures to accelerate the clearance of goods and thereby making the assessment of import consignments contactless and paperless. The pilot programme of faceless assessment was launched in Chennai in 2019 and it will be rolled out in all the ports in the country, excluding Land Customs Stations.
In the North Eastern Region, Inland Container Depot (ICD), Amingaon and Air Cargo, Guwahati have been brought under Faceless Assessment from  September 15, 2020.The faceless assessment Group (FAG) and the Turant Suvidha Kendra (TSK) have been formed at these two locations.
Imkong Toshi Ao further informed that the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs has constituted National Assessment Centres (NACs) to ensure timely assessment of import consignments, to bring uniformity and enhanced quality of assessment and CBIC has rolled out numerous changes to the Customs clearance process to support speedy clearance. Importers can now submit electronically digitally signed supporting documents for clearance of import/export consignments in e-Sanchit application, the release added.
