Intl. day for Biological Diversity observed

Along with rest of the world, Zunheboto district observed International day for Biological Diversity (IDB) under the theme, “Our Biodiversity our Food our Health” at the Centre Church SBAK, Nito Mount, Zunheboto on May 22. 

The programme was organised by Sumi Baptist Akukuhou Kuqhakulu (SBAK) Nito Mount in collaboration with the Nagaland State Biodiversity Board (NSBB). 

DC Zunheboto, Shanavas C, graced the occasion as special guest and called upon the gathering to work for survival and for the betterment of the next generation, DIPR report stated. He further added that to preserve nature, hunting and fishing should be strictly prohibited or banned. 

The team of resource persons led by Forest Range Officer, Savinuo Kikhi explained that International Biodiversity Day is a UN sanctioned international day for promotion of biodiversity issues and is celebrated every year on May 22.

 The theme of this year ‘Our Biodiversity our Food our health’ aims to leverage knowledge and spread awareness of the dependency on food system, nutrition and health ecosystem. Various issues on how the biodiversity was polluted and spoiled or harmed and how it can be prevented or restored were dwelt in detail. Importance on Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC) and how every local body should constitute BMC within its jurisdiction under BD section 41 and the purpose of promoting conservation sustainable use and documentation of biological diversity were also deliberated.

GBs, village council chairman and church leaders attended the occasion and adopted a resolution which was read by Rev. Hukugha Zhimo, ES, SBAK, Nito Mount. 

As per the resolution it was decided that every church will observe plantation day once in a year, every church should maintain two proper waste pits, etc.
