Volunteers of Students’ Wing of Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS) Manipur locked down National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Imphal on Saturday. The students were protesting against holding of interview for the recruitment of 22 faculty members of the institute outside the state even as the permanent campus is in Imphal.

The interview reportedly commenced Saturday in Kolkata despite repeated appeal to hold the same in Imphal and postpone the same until the authority address the demand.

After locking down the institute, convener Manjit Sarangthem said that the interview was reportedly conducted in Kolkata against the demand of various CSOs of the state to hold the recruitment interview in the state. While demanding that the interview be declared null and void, Manjit said, “there is no valid reason for holding the interview outside the state.”

Manjit claimed that the interview scheduled on August 18 and 19 at Hotel Gateway, Kolkata, was against the rule and the decision to hold the interview outside the state was a ploy to carry out different kinds of misconduct and wrong doings during the interview process. He alleged that the decision was akin to mocking the indigenous people of the state while raising suspicion about NIT staff and the government of cahoots for some hidden agenda.

Reasoning that recruitment for Central institutions has always been held at their respective regions or place, the convener warned of intense agitation.
