Janata Dal (United) Nagaland state unit Thursday expressed dismay over the passage of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha on January 8, 2019 despite stiff opposition not only from the opposition parties but even from the NDA allies.

JD (U) Nagaland through its media cell asserted that JD (U) was the first political party to oppose the Bill by adopting resolution at its national executive meeting on July 8, 2018 in New Delhi. However, the party said the Lok Sabha, having numerical advantage, passed the bill thereby totally crashing the appeals of the indigenous people of the North East.

JD(U), an ally of NDA at the centre, maintained that the Bill has set in a course of division amongst the people of the northeast on communal lines. “The passage of the Bill have ignited inflammable furnace causing  grave injuries not only to the hopes of the indigenous people but even physical damages are being inflicted resulting even to the loss of innocent lives,” it stated.

In the light of the above, the JD(U) Nagaland has reaffirmed its earlier stand endorsing the its national executive council meeting resolution opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. The party said it would continue to do so even being a part of the PDA government of Nagaland. The JD (U) Nagaland also expressed solidarity with the people of northeast in the fight and struggle against the passage of the Bill.
