The Karbi Cultural Society has condemned the remark of Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma who in a public meeting held in West Karbi Anglong during the observation of 68th Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council foundation day at Dongka, on Sunday last mentioned that Karbis are part and parcel of Assamese society. The The Karbi Cultural Society through a press communiqué has stated that such a “naive remark made by Dr. Sarma is not based on facts but just a fabrication and is intolerable for the Karbi society.”  It also stated that Karbis are racially mongoloid and linguistically Indo-Tibetan and came to Assam much earlier than the Ahom. The Ahoms came to Assam only in 1228 AD and they started their journey from the original habitats in northern Myanmar (Burma) in 1215 AD. The KCS while referring from the pages of history, pointed out that during the British rule the Karbis were given due recognition and territories were classified as backward track in 1919 and  the government act of 1935 which eventually received Autonomous Council under sixth schedule with other hills tribal after India’s independence. The KCS press note mentioned that “it is fortunate enough that the constitution have given provision for creation of Autonomous State under Article 244-A for Karbis and Dimasas which again clearly shows that Karbis and other hills tribes are not at all identical with the plain people of Assam.”
