Kohima District Truck Owners & Drivers’ Union (KDTODU) held its 22nd annual general meeting-cum-picnic on January 25, at New High Court site, Meriema, with president, NVCO, Kezhokhoto Savi, as guest speaker.

A press release general secretary, KDTODU, Kiivethi Puro, stated that speaking on the topic “Illegal taxation on highways” Savi termed the lease system of collecting toll and utility fee in Dimapur introduced by Dimapur Municipal Council and Municipal Affairs department, as “Illegal”, which was simply multiplying illegal collection of cash/tax in commercial hub of the state.
He added that this system of practice was possible only when certain builders/companies invested in construction of roads or bridges out of their own resources and then government can allow them to collect toll tax to recover their expenditures in constructing public roads or bridges. He also stated that with implementation of GST, several states including North Eastern states had pulled out pay counter collection in their states.
He further appreciated Kohima District Truck Owners & Drivers’ Union for their role in fighting against illegal collection of cash and submitted a representation to deputy commissioner, Kohima. A committee was also set up to enquire into illegal taxation at check gates and on highways.
Kohima District Truck Owners & Drivers’ Union legal advisor, Anungla Longkumer, exhorted that every driver must keep complete vehicle document and up to date insurance and not to drive under influence of alcohol.
New team of office bearers for the tenure 2020 to 2023 was also held, led by Riivese Sokha as president and Kiivethi Puro as general secretary.
