Kohima assault case: Police identify prime suspect

Kohima police Wednesday disclosed that in connection with the assault and extortion case in Kohima on July 9, 2020, the prime suspect has been identified as Kevidetuo Angami of Kohima village, who was allegedly a habitual offender with criminal record.

It may be mentioned that All Kohima Indane Distributors’ Association (AKIDA) on Tuesday served a one-week deadline on the state government to take action against the miscreants who assaulted drivers of LPG vehicles on July 4 and July 9, 2020.

According to Kohima police PRO, the person was evading arrest and all out efforts were on to nab the accused and identify the remaining accused. PRO said SDPO (N) Kohima police was supervising the case, adding that a look out notice has been issued against the main accused. 

PRO also said that one individual was arrested in connection with the extortion from LPG truck drivers on July 4 and have also established that three miscreants were involved in the assault and extortion case on July 9. The arrested accused has been identified as one Khusato Keyho (25) of Khutsa village, Phek district. Police said the accused has admitted to committing the crime and has named an accomplice in the commission of crime, adding that efforts were on to nab the absconding accused.

Meanwhile, SSP Kohima, Kevithuto Sophie, has assured that all out effort would be made to take the investigation to a logical conclusion.

SSP Kohima also stated that reports of extortion and highway robbery was reported beginning from the last week of May, as the state government announced partial relaxation of lockdown. 

Based on various inputs, Kohima police started operations in the month of June and registered three criminal cases in North PS on June 3, June 16 and June 18, 2020. 

Based on the strength of the cases registered, Kohima police busted a criminal gang of highway robbers and arrested the five individuals identified as Viketouzo @ baby (37) of Zhadima village, P/A Lower PWD (arrested on June 12, 20); Renpemo Tsopoe (24) currently residing at Midland colony Kohima (arrested on June 17, 2020); Ase-o Kense (27) of Touphema village, P/A Phezoucha colony, Kohima (arrested on June 16, 2020); Mongchao Khiam (29) of Nokhu village, Tuensang, P/A Thizama village, Kohima (arrested on June 16, 2020) and Khosato Keyho @ Kenny (25) of Khutsa village, Phek, P/A PWD (Lower) Colony, Kohima (arrested on July 4, 2020).

Police said all the arrested persons were caught with extortion slips, weapons and ammo and other incriminating articles and materials. Police said it was highly suspected that the assault and extortion incident on July 4, 2020 and July 9, 2020 were carried out by fringes of the same criminal gang. 

SSP Kohima has sought the cooperation of the public in providing any information regarding the activities of such criminal gangs.
