The three-day long 9th Kohima District Table Tennis Championship, organised by Kohima Table Tennis Association (KTTA), got underway Tuesday at Table Tennis Stadium, Kohima.

Kevithuto Sophie, NPS, Sr. Superintendent of Police, Kohima graced the opening ceremony as the special guest. Addressing the gathering, the special guest expressed his happiness to see the huge turnout for the championship. The game has drastically gone down despite the game being very popular in the state in the early70s and 80s, said Sophie.

He also lamented that most of the sportspersons are seasonal players. Table tennis is one game where the state can excel, said Sophie while adding that with techniques, practice and dedication, the state players can shine.

Altogether, 56 players including 18 veteran players have registered for the championship. 60 year old Mayang Longkumer is the oldest player, while 11 year old girl Vichaduonuo Rame is the youngest player taking part in the tournament.

The overall total prize money for the championship is Rs. 40,000.

The categories for the three day event are veterans singles and doubles (40+ and above), men’s singles and doubles (open category), women’s singles (open category), youth singles (under -21) and sub-juniors (under -14).
