The 7th Kohima District Open Volleyball Tournament 2019 (Men & Women) organised by Kohima District Volleyball Association (KDVA) got underway at Kohima local ground on Monday. 

Alun Hangsing, secretary, Youth Resources & Sport, who graced the opening ceremony as special guest, said sports develop friendship and has became an instrument to carry forward peace and harmony. He, therefore, called upon the players to play with passion. “Believe in yourself and play like champions,” he told the players.

Visasielie Suohu, president, KDVA informed that the association has decided to confer ‘Best Coach Award’ from this edition onwards. 

Altogether, 13 teams are competing in men’s championship and 5 teams in women’s category.  

The champions in men’s category will get Rs.40,000 and runners-up to receive Rs. 20,000. In women’s category, the champions will receive Rs.30,000 while the runners-up will pocket Rs. 15,000. The losing semi-finalists will also receive 5,000 each while the best setter, best spiker and best coach will receive Rs. 2,000 each. 

In the first match in men's category, two-time defending champions, Phesama YO beat Elizer, Kiruphema 25-20, 25 – 16. Kiruphema Youth Organisation beat Khawakhrie UM by 25-14, 25-16 and also won their second match against United Sporting Club by 25-12, 25-22. 

Khonoma Youth Organisation overcame St. Joseph College 22-25, 25-19, 25-13 and also defeated Nexus Club 25-18, 25-19 in the second match. 

Chenino Brothers beat Falcon, Mima 25-19, 25-13 and Fun Club, Peducha overpowered Kezo Town Youth Organisation 20-25, 25-10, 25-20. 

In women's category, defending champions Elite Sisters defeated Khonoma Youth Organisation 25-20, 25 12, while Kezo Town beat St. Joseph College 25-20, 25-18.
