KVKs celebrate ‘World Soil Day’ across Nagaland

Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) across Nagaland celebrated “World Soil Day” Thursday under the theme, "Stop soil erosion, Save our future". 

The 2019 theme aims to “raise awareness on the importance of sustaining healthy ecosystems and human well-being by addressing the increasing challenges in soil management and, raise the profile of healthy soil by encouraging governments, organizations, communities and individuals around the world to engage in proactively improving soil health”.

Aboi: KVK Mon celebrated “World Soil Day” at the Council Hall, Mohung Village, Aboi with SMS (soil conservation), Imtinukung as the resource person.

Imtinukung highlighted the importance of the day and purpose of soil health card. He also encouraged the farmers to maintaining proper soil health card and requested them to submit soil samples to the kendra for analysis and updates on soil status of their individual crop field.

The programme began with invocation by Mohung Baptist Church Pastor Methna and welcome address by VDB secretary, P Engo. Soil health card was distributed to the farmers by village council chairman, W. Angnyei and VDB secretary; vote of thanks was delivered by the council chairman and benediction by Angh of Mohung village Manchai. 

Wokha: ICAR-KVK, Wokha celebrated World Soil Day at ICAR-KVK Wokha Conference Hall with Deputy Commissioner (DC) Wokha, Orenthung Lotha as the chief guest. 

In a welcome address, senior scientist & head, ICAR-KVK Wokha and chairman of the programme, Dr. Santosh Kr. Baishya stated the objective of the celebration of the day.

He also emphasised the importance of soil sample testing and soil health management for better crop productivity and reduction in cost of cultivation. 

Joint director, district agriculture office, Wokha, Santsu Kithan, shared the importance of soil for sustainable healthy ecosystems and human well being.

DC Wokha, Orenthung Lotha encouraged the farmers to maintain soil health saying that fertility of the soil will be affected which in turn would threaten global food supplies and food safety. 

SMS (Horticulture), Megokhono Meyase delivered a brief presentation on the importance of soil and soil sampling procedures. Soil health cards and certificates of skill training (ASCI) were also distributed during the programme. , SMS (Animal Science), Dr. H. Moaakum delivered vote of thanks. 

Tuensang: KVK Tuensang celebrated World Soil Day at Changsao Thangjam Setshang Hall, Tuensang. 

In a keynote address, senior scientist & head, Keviletsu Khate emphasized on the importance of sustaining healthy ecosystem and human well being by addressing the ever increasing challenges in soil erosion and its management. 

He encouraged the farmers to engage proactively in improving soil health, which is the most important component for our economic sustenance. 

The program was chaired by ACTO (Genetics and Plant Breeding), Martina Shitiri. Thematic presentation of the celebration was delivered by assistant chief technical officer, Tokiho Achumi. In commemoration of the day, 230 numbers of soil health cards were issued based on the soil analysis for respective farmers and vote of thanks was delivered by programme assistant, Seveto Nyekha.

Sowa Changle:  KVK Mon, Nagaland under National Innovations Climate Resilient in Agriculture – Technology Demonstration Component (NICRA-TDC) celebrated World Soil Day at Sowa Changle village, which was selected in 2018 as additional village under NICRA-TDC project. 

The programme was chaired by assistant chief technical officer (animal science), Dr. Paihem Michui; ACTO (GPB), Dr. M.S Sachan highlighted the importance of the day which was followed by soil health card distributed to the farmers and vote of thanks was delivered by chairman, Sowa Changle village council, Anglem Konyak.
