Meghalaya health department on Wednesday hinted that the state’s capital Shillong was likely heading towards community spread of COVID-19.

Talking to media persons, director of Health Services (MI), Aman War said that many persons had tested positive during random testing conducted in Shillong and the plain belt of Garo Hills.

“We are going into a community spread in Shillong and the plain belt of Garo Hills, especially in Trikikilla but a statement to confirm this would be issued after discussing thoroughly,” War said.

“In Garo Hills, plain belt areas and Tikrikilla are areas of concern where we suspect community spread has started,” he informed.

War said an advisory has been sent to the medical officer, who will sent a report to the district administration to contain the area.

Terming the overall COVID-19 scenario in the State as “not good”, Health and Family Welfare Minister, Alexander Laloo Hek said random testing to check the spread of the COVID-19 in the State would continue wherever necessary.

“We will continue to conduct random testing in the commercial areas -- Iew Mawlong, Motphran, Police Bazaar-- in the city, besides other areas and localities in the State,” Hek said, iterating the government’s appeal not to venture out unnecessarily and to adhere to all SOPs issued by the Health and Family Welfare department.
