Meghalaya Police has detained one person for questioning in the kidnap and rape of a minor girl here in Meghalaya, a police official said on Saturday.
Meghlaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, chairperson Meena Kharkongor has also urged upon the police to arrest all the four accused in the sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl on the night of January 29. “We have detained one person for interrogation in connection with the case. We have started questioning him,” a police official  said.
The police official however refused to divulge any further detail. Meanwhile, the victim, who is admitted to a city hospital, is still kept in the ICU. “I have also personally met the DGP, R. Chandranathan to immediately register the case since it is a sensitive issue,” Kharkongor said. The four accused had forcefully dragged the girl in their vehicle from one of the petrol pumps in the city. The minor girl was drugged and allegedly raped after she was kidnapped. Kharkongor said that besides sexually assaulting the girl, the accused also cut her body with blade.
“After committing the crime, the four accused threw the girl out of their vehicle in one of the market places in the city. I have been informed that the driver of the pick-up vehicle has surrendered before the police,” Kharkongor said. Meanwhile, the Civil Society Women Organisation (CSWO), urged the authority to find the culprits immediately. “The government should provide immediate interim compensation to the victim, to help the family as the family had to buy medicines from outside as there were no medicines in the government hospital where the girl is treated,” CSWO president, Agnes Kharshiing said.
