Satya Pal Malik, who was transferred from Goa and appointed as Governor of Meghalaya by President RamNath Kovind on Tuesday, took charge at the Raj Bhavan, Shillong on Wednesday night.

He was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court, Justice Biswanath Somadder.

Malik replaced Tathagata Roy who completed his five-year gubernatorial tenure in May this year, but had continued to be in office on extension.

This is Malik’s third transfer in the past one year. In fact, Malik’s tenure in Goa was marked with differences of opinion with Goa chief minister Pramod Sawant in handling of the COVID situation in the coastal State, besides opposing Goa government’s plan for construction of a new Raj Bhavan (governor’s house) “as irrational and imprudent” when the State is battling COVID-19 and reeling under financial crises.

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by chief minister Conrad K. Sangma, Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh, Justice Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew, Justice Wanulra Diengdoh, Director General of Police R Chandranathan.
