Ruling Manipur BJP kick-started its election campaign for its candidate in the Outer Manipur (ST Reserved) Parliamentary from Thoubal district on Saturday.

H Shokhopao alias Benjamin Mate will contest the election on BJP ticket from the Outer Seat of the Lok Sabha. He kick-started his election campaign from the district BJP office at Thoubal district headquarters.

While launching the campaign, Mate expressed confidence of BJP securing the seat while hoping that he would get 80 per cent of the total votes from the seven Assembly segments spread across two valley districts - Thoubal and Kakching.

The Outer Manipur (ST Reserved) Parliamentary Constituency covers

20 Assembly segments spread across the 10 hill districts plus eight Assembly segments in the valley districts –Thoubal, Kakching and Jiribam districts.

As no person from general and scheduled caste categories can contest in this ST reserved seat, traditionally, candidates try luring voters from these eight Assembly segments.

In the last Lok Sabha elections, for instance, the Congress candidate won the election by security 63% of the nearly two lakh voters from these eight segments.

H Shokhopao  claimed that as Thoubal and Kakching districts border his home district (Chandel), voters will prefer voting in favour of him. He further claimed that during his door-to-door campaign conducted at Wangjing area of the district earlier on Saturday morning, he was given warm a welcome besides receiving  blessings from the elders.
