Manipur police arrest fraudster from Mumbai

Leader of an organized gang indulged in withdrawal of money from banks across the country using fraudulent cheques has been arrested by Manipur police from Maharashtra.

Sandeep Patel (23) son of Lalbrat Patel of Uttar Pradesh was arrested by a team of state police with the help of Maharashtra police from his present residence at Baramati in Maharashtra on November 17.

He was arrested in connection with withdrawal of money amounting to Rs 1.273 crore using fraudulent cheques from the Bank of Baroda. Of the total amount, Rs 94 lakh was from the account of the Manipur University and Rs 33.3 lakh from an account of an individual from Imphal.

He was brought to Imphal Tuesday and state police have taken a four-day remand after producing in the court of Imphal West chief judicial magistrate, Imphal West SP Hoabijam Jogeshchandra told reporters.

The SP said that the arrested Sandeep Patel along with his associates had fraudulently withdrawn the money in the name of a firm “Patel Real Estate”. 

His associates were at large, he added.

The SP claimed that arrested Patel is the leader of an organized gang and has members in the whole country.

Patel was arrested based on two different complaints lodged with the Singjamei police station of Imphal West district, the SP said.

During the course of investigation into the cases, state police established that Sandeep Patel is the owner of the Patel Real Estate having an account (A/c no. 110605017251) at Punjab National Bank, Baramati in Maharashtra.

The police also raided his rented room cum office and recovered some documents and articles related with the fraudulent withdrawal of money from the banks.

The accused has more than 12 bank accounts in his name at different banks, said the SP.

Efforts were on to arrest the gang members who are at large, Imphal West SP Hoabijam Jogeshchandra added.
