Manipur police made a major breakthrough in its ongoing war on drugs by seizing 9.722 kg of Brown Sugar valued around Rs 19 crore in the international market.

A team of police in Tengnoupal, Manipur’s district bordering with Myanmar,  seized the huge quantity of the drugs on Saturday (October 19) evening, state police PRO said in a statement on Sunday.

The contraband drug was seized by the police team who had launched a mobile frisking and checking at Dalpati area near international border at the border town Moreh to intercept any contraband items/drugs smuggled through the porous border.

At around 5.30 pm, a scooter loaded with two gunny bags behind the rider was seen approaching the frisking team from Myanmar side. The team then signalled the scooter  to stop for frisking and checking using torch light.

The individual then tried to flee after which he was chased. As the road was narrow and the rider could not negotiate a turn, the individual left the vehicle along with two gunny bags on the vehicle.

One of the personnel tried to catch him but he escaped towards the Myanmar crossing the international border taking advantage of darkness, PRO said in the statement.

The two gunny bags were found to contain suspected Brown Sugar weighting a total of   9.722 kg including weight of the transparent plastic packets.

The price of the suspected Brown Sugar is estimated at Rs19 crore, the statement claimed.

The suspected Brown Sugar, items used in packing and the scooter (Suzuki Access 125) were seized by observing all legal formalities and registering a regular case at Moreh police station for investigation, the statement added.
