The Chief Medical Officer’s Office of Wokha district, organized a re-orientation program on Maternal Child Death Review (MCDR) on April 12, in its office chambers.

Wokha NHM, district media officer, Mhonbeni Ezung, in a press release stated that deputy CMO, Dr. Zuben Kikon highlighted the need for new guidelines to vary the degree of reporting, review and action planning.

He pointed out that only 50% of the estimated maternal deaths in India get reported under the Health Management Information Systems.

The guideline is being revised with a focus on surveillance for improved reporting and response, and includes precise mechanisms for review of deaths of migrant population for classification of maternal deaths.

Dr. Kikon further stated that training of medical officers on maternal deaths is also a part of the MCDSR guidelines. The district MCDSR committee shall monitor the meeting’s template, annual report and supportive supervision checklist.

Members discussed ensuring proper record maintenance of all deaths of women in the age group of 15 to 49 years.

The district MDCSR committee will review all maternal/child deaths followed by actions to improve quality of care and prevent future maternal deaths and conduct thorough investigations irrespective of the place of death.

They also discussed letting ASHAs of all villages keep proper records of all pregnant women and insist that the pregnant women go for full ANCs in health facilities.

The MCDSR is a continuous cycle of identification, notification and review of maternal death followed by actions to improve quality of care and prevent future deaths. The program was attended by MO (Obs & Gynae) DH, and program officers.
