Mega drug lab busted in Manipur, heroin worth over Rs 165 cr seized

In yet another major breakthrough in the ‘war on drug’ in Manipur, an illegal heroin manufacturing unit was busted in Manipur’s Thoubal district on Monday.

Two siblings allegedly running the illegal factory along with 41.293 kg of Brown Sugar estimated worth over Rs 165.172 crore in the international market was seized, police said on Tuesday.
The illegal factory was busted by a combined force of Manipur police and 26 Assam Rifles at Sada Khumbi village under Nongpok Sekmai police station in Thoubal district around 2 pm on Monday,the police said.
The two arrested persons were; Wungreingam Awungshi (45) and his younger brother Ningkhangam Awungshi (39), both sons of Shangchuti Awungshi of Sada Khumbu village.
Apart from the huge quantity of contraband drug, the combined force also recovered some items allegedly used in the manufacture of Heroin and Rs 2.8 lakhs cash  suspected to be proceeds of sale of Heroin, police said.
Parading the two arrested siblings along with the seized at Thoubal district police headquarters, SP Dr S Ibomcha Singh said that the operation was launched based on specific information of operation of an illegal heroin (brown sugar) manufacturing laboratory at the residence of Ningkhangam at Sada Khumbi village.
He said that the combined force of Thoubal police and troops of 26 Assam Rifles launched the operation which was directly monitored by inspector general of police (Zone-1) Clay Khongsaid and deputy inspector general of police (Range-II) K Kabib, the SP informed.
Based on credible report, the combined force immediately rushed to the residence of Ningkhangam Awungshi where a search was launched.
The combined force first detected two large sacks containing suspected contraband Heroin (Brown Sugar) and items which are used in manufacturing contraband drug items.
They found the two sacks; one sack containing 14.316 kgs of suspected brown sugar and the other 26.305 kgs of suspected brown sugar, the SP said.
Four rubber hand gloves, one white cloth, 127 tobacco cans, two wooden pressing board machines and three plastic sheets were also recovered, he said.
Upon further search of house of Wungreingam Awungshi and based on disclosure made by his brother, the combined teams further found two polythene bags containing suspected contraband Heroin (Brown Sugar) 502 gram and 170 grams respectively and other items including Rs 2.8 lakhs in cash.
Forensic experts of state police also joined in the further operation.
Other items recovered from the house include one lime bag, one wooden pressing board, one water brite, one plastic jerry can of 20 litres capacity containing 10 litres of morphinated liquid and one bottle of ammonium chloride weighing 50 gm. 
The SP said that the total quantity of Brown Sugar seized during the raid was 41.293 kgs of Herion Brown Sugar and 10 litres of morphinated liquid. 
The SP revealed that as per opinion of forensic experts, the seized Brown Sugar was of grade-II quality and as such  the value of the seized contraband drug were put at Rs 165.172 crore,
He added that as the market value of morphinated liquid was not available with the police, they could be not calculated the value of seized liquid.
The police have initiated an investigation after lodging a case at Nongpok Sekmai police station, the SP informed.
Tuesday’s operation busting brown sugar factory was not the first time in the state. Since the state government declared war on drugs, many illegal brown sugar (heroin) manufacturing units had been busted.
 In most of the cases of busting illegal factories, huge quantity of brown sugar which worth crores of rupees were seized.
