Meghalaya launches ‘Mushroom Mission’ policy

Meghalaya Agriculture Minister, Banteidor Lyngdoh on Monday launched the draft policy of the “Mushroom Mission” with an aim to scale up mushroom production in ‘mission mode.’

“In this (Mushroom) Mission, we propose to invest Rs. 50 crore over the next five year, about Rs 10 crore each year, in a about 130 villages and based on the results we can expand the next phase further” Lyngdoh said after releasing draft policy.  

He said that the Mushroom Mission will make cluster approach investments in all villages that have some experience have been included in the Mission for further investments and development.

Lyngdoh said that the government also wants to explore the possibility of establishing a Mushroom Food Park in the state capital of Meghalaya, where entrepreneurs of the state could be invited to take part in creating and producing value-added Mushroom products at one place.

Meghalaya additional chief secretary K.N. Kumar said that more than 1000 farmers and entrepreneurs would be covered through the Mission across the state in a cluster approach.

He said the Mission will focus mainly on the production of Oyster Mushroom, Button Mushroom and Shiitake Mushroom,

“The Mission strives to augment farmer incomes by providing an alternate source of livelihood and an activity that can be taken up during the lean season when temperatures are suitable for mushroom cultivation,” he said.  

Kumar said the target to be achieved under the Mushroom Mission is to increase production from the present 27 metric tonne to 5000 metric tonne within five years.
